Deutsche Bahn expands night train services across Europe

29 Connections to nine European countries ● bookings simplified

Deutsche Bahn’s night train services are being reorganised. As of the timetable change on 9 December all DB’s night trains will operate under a single brand name, CityNightLine, and on a considerably expanded international network. „Deutsche Bahn is number one in European night train transport. And we will expand on this position“, said the chairman of DB Fernverkehr AG. „The international services will be further developed. As of December we will offer 29 connections to nine European countries.“ The aim is to continue the international success of the ICE trains in the night train connections. Amsterdam - together with Munich and Zurich - will form the hub of European night train services. The current connections from Copenhagen, Prague, Vienna and Milan will be extended to the Dutch capital. Customers from the UK can board the night trains in Cologne to cities such as Copenhagen, Prague, Vienna and Milan.

All DB’s night trains will operate under the CityNightLine brand from December onwards. Besides the white and red train design, a consistently high standard of comfort, quality and service will be offered throughout. This will mean, for example, the same uniforms for all staff and the same options offered by the on-board catering. The booking of tickets will also be greatly simplified. For the first time, it will be possible to book almost all through journeys by night train all over Europe online, with the exception of night trains to/from France, Belgium and Italy. A sleeper compartment can in future be reserved for single use without the 1st class ticket, which was required until now - an advantage for business travellers in particular. Only for the deluxe compartment including shower and toilet will a first class ticket still be necessary. The SparNight fares on CityNightLine will start from £49.70 per person and journey for a berth in a sleeper compartment, from £35.30 for a berth in a couchette compartment and from £20.90 for a seat.

Switzerland remains the most important foreign destination for CityNightLine, with connections to Basle and Zurich from Amsterdam (via Cologne) and Copenhagen. A new connection will operate from Basle to Prague. As of December 2007 all night trains operating between Munich and Venice/Rome will use sleeper carriages which have been renovated to a high standard.
