ICE with Tilting Technology (ICE T)

The ICE is the flagship product of Deutsche Bahn. The range of fast ICE connections has been steadily expanded since 1991.

The second ICE generation has been in operation since 1996.

The ICE: Successful since 1991

The Reason for an ICE with Tilting Technology

The first two ICE generations are able to achieve their short journey times, which have met with excellent response in the market, only when travelling on purpose-built track. However, there is also a demand for ICE connections on routes on which the construction of dedicated ICE tracks is unacceptable for economic reasons owing to the comparatively low demand.

In order to offer shorter journey times combined with tried-and-tested ICE comfort and convenience on such routes too, DB introduced the ICE with tilting technology (ICE T) on 30 May 1999. This system, which has been in successful operation in Italy for decades, means that the train tilts inwards by up to 8° when travelling through curves, in much the same way as a motor cyclist. This allows it to travel at 30% higher speed in curves. Needless to say, this does not in any way impair safety or comfort for the passengers.

Ice with Tilting Technology in different versions

ICE trains with tilting technology come in different versions. As electrically powered 5- and 7-segment units. All two series can be connected to each other and operate as dual trains.

New Standards of Comfort and Convenience

In addition to the special services offered in all ICE trains (reservation of seats, special equipment for wheelchair transportation and families with children) we realized further qualitiy features. Both the ICE T as well as the ICE 3 generation represent new standards of comfort and convenience.

The entire vehicle technology for drive, power supply and control is located underneath the vehicle floors, eliminating the need for engine rooms. For the first time, passengers have access to the entire length of the train between the driver’s cabs. Passengers can watch the driver at work through a glass panel and experience the journey through the driver’s eyes. These so-called lounge seats are available in both 1st and 2nd class.

Improved mobile phone reception

The introduction of repeaters has considerably improved mobile phone reception. These repeaters have meanwhile been retrofitted in the other ICE trains. To avoid disturbing fellow passengers, they are available in certain coaches only and are indicated by a special pictogram. Passengers can reserve seats in such areas on all ICE trains.

The leaflet "Ihr Reiseplan" which is provided for you at your seat contains further information about the services on the train.

The Service Compartment

The service compartment is located in coach no. 23, where a staff member will help you with further information.
